Please do not attempt to do this place, it is alarmed up and is in the middle of a live hospital with cameras everywhere and onsite security. Burnley General hospital was originally a work house for the poor back in the 1800's, with italian syle stone from quarries around burnley. The main building was T-shaped containing the admin office, guardians boardroom, master offices and stores for the inmates clothes. Males were placed in the west wind and women in the east wing. These had day rooms for the aged and imbeciles to the front and the able bodied and children to the back. There were later additions in the 1880's including the vagrants block (see the last set of images) The first place we got shown was the clock tower......... access was erm.... interesting lol, as you can see by the really worn wooden ladder, but well worth it, although i did headbutt one of the bells when getting up there haha. The bells were made in 1882 and are being donated to a museum. The cinema had it's own orchestra, that played the musical accompaniment to the silent films. It had much competition over the years but won over all the other cinemas that were dotted around camberley. Unfortunatly Robins is based in an area classed as prime development (and also due to a large fire there) will start coming down shortly. This place is quite mint inside despite the fire on the other section. strange to see all the seats in near perfect condition. It was build to help with the growing number of patients around the area which were unable to get into the Springfield and Brookwood asylums. It held around 2000 patients, closing in 1991, with the secure unit later closing in 2008 The hospital's motto was Aversos Compono Animos, which apparently translates into 'I bring relief to troubled minds' Did a mass group visit to this place after hearing about the demolition team moving in the day after our arranged visit. Was a fantastic trip and surprising that non of us got caught. We heard the security dog barking every so often but we kept our wits about us and got to saw quite a bit of the place. I have put the patient art in a seperate section as this needs recognition. Most of the artwork has now been destroyed by the demolition teams which is sad, as i would have liked to have documented more. This place is partly a museum, but access is not allowed into the building as they are trying to convert them into a full museum. We found access into certain parts of the buildings with some original features. Was great to see, but wish we has seen more as we had missed loads, going on other peoples photos of the place. Hellingly opened in 1903 and continued to serve the local community for the next 90 years, but with so many other asylums a change in policy on the treatment of patients meant closure of the majority of the buildings in 1994. This place is trashed, but once again, hearing that this place may be gone soon, i thought i would go and have a look. This place is like a giant maze. Got lost so many time down the many identical corridors. Worth a look if your in the area. We had to look! the steel gate had been bent so we could easily slide our way in. Looking interesting we venture further into the cave to find a red brick doorway, and on looking in, we were next to a live railway track in a tunnel about a mile long. Eek, so we high tailed it out of there, not without some pictures first of course! The Hospital was partially demolished and an old peoples home was built in its place. The only remains of the original hospital is the mortuary. History is really hard to find on this place. I have some somewhere but dont know exactly where. I like this place, small but a good set of fridges and a nice basement. (I didnt go down this time because it looks alot more damaged than when i last went in.) I spoke to the nurses that work in the old peoples home and she said that there was a mortuary slab there only 5/6 years ago, but was taken out and thrown in the skip when they emptied to place out. My main reason to re-visit was to get some better pictures of the place before they decide to demolish it. Wednesday 27 February 2008: It was nearly a year ago and one of my first Urban explores. They ask for me to wait for the guy in charge.... i was in....... but with strict rules (lots of politics involved) no name of the bank, non of there corperate stuff etc. (He even checked my images and deleted ones with too much information on! But it was worth it. An amazing site with some fantastic features. This place is very trashed and we were unsure of what it was. In the end after the explore we decided it was just a trashed teaching fascility (as we found lots of training sheets). After a bit of looking around on the internet, we found that it was actually the old farm block of the hospital. It had an Anglican church, a catholic chapel and a recreation hall. It also had a private railway which used to provide much needed coal and other goods. In the earlier years of the hospital, there was also a brewery on site. During both world wars part of the hospital was used a military hospital. The hospital fully closed in 1995 and has plans to build 650 new homes on the site and hopefully preserve some of the original hospital buildings. I have been here a few times when i first started out exploring and is a great starting point to get to grips with the dangers of a derelict building, security and the magic of being silent when needed. Whittingham Hospital is an amazing explore. So much to see, so many different places and so interesting. i have loads of pictures so i have picked some of the ones that depict the place the most. Here students studyied the priesthood and were also ordained here. St Joseph's is now coming to the fate of many beautiful buildings aorund the UK and is being turned into apartments. But because it is a listed (grade II) building the exterior will stay virtually the same. An amazing explore which not many people have done. Some amazing artifacts remaining such as old latin books, the beds, the statues the views, infact, everything. I would love to go back here and have another look. The place closed suddenly without warning and the 300 employees that worked there had been locked out of the mill and would not recieve their wages A Mr Bill Heaton, who worked at the site for 20 years said: "Security turned up with dogs and then we knew that something was wrong. "They said '.....it's finished. As soon as the machines are run down, everybody off site'." "We haven't got last week's money at all and we're not going to get it. " Poor guys. This was a supervised visit with the head of demoliton for the site, and quite rightly as well, as 20ish foot away from me they were ripping the place down with big machines. It all added to the feeling that an important part of peoples lives was coming to a complete end. It was amazing feeling the whole place shake as they were knocking some of the remaining buildings down. I did get there slightly too late as the place was quite bare. This was a supervised visit with the head of demoliton for the site, and quite rightly as well, as 20ish foot away from me they were ripping the place down with big machines. It all added to the feeling that an important part of peoples lives was coming to a complete end. It was amazing feeling the whole place shake as they were knocking some of the remaining buildings down. I did get there slightly too late as the place was quite bare.

It was a huge rectreational complex and had som much to look at inside. You have to remember it was my first explore with a new camera, therefor the pictures are exceptionally poor. sorry! These posts are scattered around the UK including the small islands around the UK. They were used at the start of the cold war as the increasing threat of nuclear attack in the 1950's rose. The ROC was given the responsibility of reporting nuclear bursts and monitoring fallout. When we visited this ROC post (my first) it was wrecked. There had been a fire down there, which made lots of smoke damage on the walls and ceiling. It seemed that at one point someone had been sleeping down there. Nothing much left, only remains are the BT box and the cupboard.... oh and the "mind your back and head sign" which was hidden under rubble and empty beer cans. The original owner was Joseph Edwards whom died in 1868 before the castle was completed. His son finished the building work in 1871. In 1962 the building was demolished after an auction of its structure and adornments. It was famous in its time for its water features and gardens, at one time boasting of a fountain as tall as the one in Versailles. The land and what is left of the features, have been taken over by the Water Board. Access to the site is restricted and is very difficult to get too as there are no pulic roads or footpaths leading to it. Also the risk of the farmer setting his dogs on you is a big on, as many people have been threatened. Fantastic find for me, as noone else i know of even knew this place still existed. Then the prize, the air raid tunnels that run under the hospital, and to the bigger hospital up the road (which has unfortunatly been blocked off). Some original hospital equiptment down there such as glass medical bottles and an old x-ray viewer. All in all, alot better than i expected of this place.
